Once again, we find ourselves in the midst of the application period for the Orchard Project. As in the past, we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your past, present, and on-going support of new work and our vision. And, as we begin to search for more bold voices to join our community, we once again look to you for recommendations. Your recommendations are an invaluable part of this process; they help us to find the best people with the boldest ideas who are prepared to take advantage of the Orchard Project and who will help the program continue to improve and grow. This is your moment to let us know who you recommend and to encourage outstanding artists, teams, or partnerships (including your own) to apply to the Orchard Project.
Since 2007, the Orchard Project has given companies, teams, and artists the space and time they need to develop bold new ideas, and it is undoubtably the most prolific developer of new works in the country. In the past ten years, we have accelerated projects by Tectonic Theatre Project, London's Royal Court, The Public Theatre, Pig Iron, the TEAM, Paines Plough, Naked Angels, Elevator Repair Service, The Rude Mechs, American Repertory Theatre and many, many others. We've played a significant role in the development of new works which have been or will be produced on and off Broadway, including the TONY winning All The Way. This year, six shows debuting in NYC were created at the Orchard Project (five Off-Broadway, and one on Broadway), not to mention others in Chicago, Los Angeles, London, Cambridge, and beyond.
We often support artists over multiple years. We think it's the quality and overlap of the residents — combined with their collective desire to share new work and push the form to the next level — that has made the Orchard Project a place to which many artists want to return.
Getting input from leaders and artists such as yourself is a key component of our decision making when deciding who is invited to the Orchard Project. We also constantly strive to expand our family and support innovators with bold ideas, and recommendations are an invaluable part of this process; they help us to find people with exciting, new ideas, who are prepared to take advantage of what we offer.
We do not look at scripts, and teams can be at any stage of their process — from just starting to formulate an idea to refining a well developed concept.
This year's application and guidelines can be viewed on our website, www.exchangenyc.org, and we would be happy to speak with you about companies or artists that you think deserve our attention.
Thanks in advance for your help. Your input means a great deal, and I hope that I will hear from you soon.
